After years spent abroad, it was time to drop everything – I mean everything, go home and fly like never before. This was going to be Vertigo's International Gathering #2.
The first one was Turkey , where Vertigo pilots and friends from around the globe met in Oludeniz for two weeks of fun and fly. This year, it was Macedonia , the home of Vertigo Paragliding Club!
Myself arrived in Skopje , the capital, on July 1 with 6 long weeks ahead of me. To prepare for the “gathering” and make everything possible for our international friends to feel like not at home but in Vertigo's home. And in that we succeeded!
Our best pilots in pursuit for results were attending the EU PG championship in Morzine , France . Out of 6 pilots alowed to participate in MKD national team, 3 were Vertigo members. A succes on its own. They were off to compeate, and we were off to fix the “tank”, a '89 Toyota LandCruiser, military version. Vertigo's moving force! The strongest vehicle I've driven in. That vehicle has carried 11 pilots + gear atop 45% steep hill – with no road on it! And with no problem as well.
The brakes were first to go, and the condition of the brakes were: What Brakes????
It took some time to find the right parts, since this is a vehicle made for military purpose, and no serial number exists in any consumer catalog in any Toyota dealership. A chalenge on its own. A day after we fixed the brakes, the front windshield was pierced by a bullet! Election night in Skopje , a gun loving socciety, with anty gun rules, but with no one to enforce them. So a stray bullet coming from above got the military Toyota and we had another problem, finding the right windshiled, on a vehicle that doesn't exist in any consumers catalog. |
